Squirrels
Who and what are Squirrel Scouts?
Squirrel Scouts is a young person’s first steps in Scouting. They are our youngest members and are aged between four and six years old. During their time they will experience lots of activities and will work towards badges including the top award – the Chief Scout Acorn Award.
What is the best thing about Squirrels?
Activities, trips and making friends are all part of what makes it so much fun for girls and boys in Squirrels. As well as earning badges, many Squirrels get to go on camps and sleepovers, often for the first time. Squirrels enjoy:
- Being creative
- Playing games
- Going on visits and investigating nature
- Learning about themselves and others
- Getting to know other people
- Discovering the worlds of science, nature and technology
- Exploring the natural and manmade world
- Caring – responding to the needs of others, the local and international community
What is a Squirrel Drey?
Squirrels normally meet weekly for about one hour in a Drey. Dreys usually have a very short opening and closing ceremony. After a few weeks of attending drey meetings and learning a little about Squirrels, a young person will be invited to be invested where they will receive their Group necker and badges relating to Scouting, County, District and Group.
Activities with other Dreys
Kim is the Programme Team Member for Beavers. She is responsible for ensuring that all young people in Beavers have fun and leave after 2 years with #SkillsForLife.
Sometimes Squirrels get together with 2 or 3 other dreys or with all of the other Squirrels in Lowry. This enables a wider range of activities and gives the opportunity for Squirrels to meet new friends, work with Squirrels whom they have not met before and grow in confidence.
District activities have included camps, sleepovers, climbing walls, visits and activity days. We also take part in events such as St George’s Day celebrations and Remembrance Sunday Parades with all the other sections in the Scouting family from around the District.
